Highway/Streets Maintenance Worker

Starting salary $37,900 - $57,900 per year

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates a variety of complex heavy equipment within the Highway, Streets and Maintenance department.

  • May be assigned to operate Right-of-Way Mower, boom mower, front loader hi-lift, dump truck, bucket truck, front end loader, or other similar equipment.

  • Sets up work zone signs, and flaggers with appropriate safety clothing.

  • Routinely inspects equipment for safety and mechanical problems.

  • Performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.

  • Cleans up sidewalks, roads, and equipment after job is complete.

  • Performs general labor duties as necessary.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • May operate various power tools such as weed-eaters, chain saws, etc.

  • Seasonally, plows snow and spreads salt on road surfaces.

  • May participate in set-up/preparation for special events.

  • Performs lower-level maintenance, service area tasks, and related work as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, and procedures used in general services.

  • Knowledge of State and Town traffic regulations.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safe working procedures.

  • Knowledge of safety precautions and maintenance of heavy equipment.

  • Knowledge of the care and use of motor vehicles.

  • Knowledge of how to properly secure heavy equipment to a trailer.

  • Ability to maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License.

  • Ability to operate various pieces of equipment and vehicles.

  • Ability to complete routine reports and paperwork.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to provide on-the-job training to new employees.

  • Ability to work in different weather conditions.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions (e.g., extreme heat or cold,

  • rain, snow, etc.).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position consists of primarily medium work, requiring the incumbent to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 20 pounds (or less) of force frequently to lift/carry, push/pull or otherwise move objects.

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or GED.

Preferred Tennessee Class A (or above) Commercial Driver’s License.

Preferred experience of at least 2 years in highway/streets maintenance work.
